Purple Delivery and Off-Gassing:

purple vs bearThe Purple mattress actually shows up to your door a little differently than most mattresses. Instead of being packed into a box, it’s neatly packed into a bag and sent out. Once there you’re going to need a bit of help to set up the Purple mattress as it weighs 110 pounds. This more than normal foam mattresses, but it does come to your door with free shipping.

The Purple mattress will have some off-gassing too it. Once it’s out of the bag you may want to let it sit for a few days before deciding to use it. This is especially important if your sensitive to smells. The mattress will have a lingering odor for a bit, and we do recommend letting it air out for a bit even if you’re not sensitive to smells.

nectar vs tuft and needleThe Tuft & Needle mattress ships to your door in a box. Once there you may want to get a friend to help with the setup process. The Tuft & Needle isn’t one of the heaviest mattresses out there, but it does weigh 60 pounds. The mattress will have little off-gassing to it, but when it unrolls it will have a bit of a smell. We do recommend you let it air out for awhile before using it. The Tuft and Needle do ship to your door for free.

Purple vs Tuft and Needle Delivery and Off-Gassing:

While both mattresses do ship to your door for free there are some key differences. This includes the fact that the Purple mattress ships in a plastic bag and the Tuft & Needle ships in a box. They both will have some off-gassing to them, as well. We recommended you give them at least 12 hours to air out. For people sensitive to smells you may even want to give the Purple a few days.

The Purple is also much heavier than the Tuft & Needle at 110 pounds. This makes the purple extremely hard to set up on your own. Both of the mattresses can be used with or without a box spring. They also can be used with any type of bed frame giving you limitless setup options.

Materials And Layer Comparison:

It’s really hard to give the Tuft & Needle mattress our approval over the Purple mattress. The Purple mattress is made of high-quality material and has several layers designed to make your night comfortable. The Tuft & Needle mattress doesn’t seem to be made of the greatest material and doesn’t exactly feel like a memory foam mattress. The Purple also features a unique design and blend of materials that are breathable. The only notable thing about the Tuft & Needle mattress is its use of gel beads in the first layer.

Purple Mattress Materials:

purple mattress review corner shot our sleep guideThe Purple mattress is actually made up of 3 different layers made of polymer and foam. These layers make a unique 9.5 inches thick mattress. The first layer of the Purple mattress is a 2-inch hyper-elastic polymer grid layer. This layer has two main purposes that it performs wonderfully, comfort and cooling.

The layer focuses on both pressure relief and alleviating pressure to points to give the mattress an ideal support while still letting you sink in. The first layer also contains a grid that helps circulate and dispel heat for a cooler sleeping experience. This layer helps by creating a soft temperature regulated to layer. The middle layer is 3.5 inches of a transitional foam.

This layer works to help promote deep comfort in the Purple mattress. It also helps make weight be distributed evenly throughout the mattress. The last layer is a 4-inch base and the foundation of the mattress. This base layer helps the Purple mattress have durability and gives the mattress most of its support. It also works well to compliment the softer tops layers and balance the mattresses overall feel.

The Purple mattress is also wrapped in a breathable polyester-blended zippable cover to keep things clean. It’s made up of 69% polyester, 38 Viscose, and 4% Lycra to create a soft breathable feel. It even has a good response to your movements and can be easily removed for cleaning when needed. It also features the Purple diamond shaped pattern on a white design to give it an attractive look when you remove the sheets.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Materials:

The Tuft & Needle mattress is 10 inches thick and is only made up of two foam layer. The Tuft & needles top layer is 3 inches of proprietary Tuft & Needle adaptive foam. This layer even contains some gel beads for an interesting feel. This layer felt like it was actually between a memory foam and latex feel.

We also noted that it lacked some of the quality that you would find in higher end foams. The bottom layer is 7 inches of 1.8 dense base foam. This base gives an ok amount of support while you are sleeping on it. The Tuft & Needle does have a polyester and rayon blend cover that is lightweight, and breathable.

Purple Comfort and Firmness:

purple vs puffy mattress comparisonThe Purple mattress a unique feel to it and has a one size fits all feel. This universal approach to comfort gives the Purple a medium firm feel, and it comes in between a 5.5 to a 6 on the ten-point firmness scale. We found that the Purple mattress will work well for many types of people. The top layer has a unique feel thanks to the textured polymer grid, although it may put some sleepers off at first.

If you like to sleep on your back the Purple mattress provides great lumbar support and does a good job at providing pressure relief while contouring to your body. If you are a side sleeper then you will be pleased to know that you can comfortably sink into this mattress. For Stomach sleepers, you may find that the bed isn’t as firm as you’d like. This can lead to a bit of bowing in your back at night. This may make primary stomach sleepers want to skip over this model. Overall though, the Purple mattress has a very unique polymer grid and is comfortable.

Tuft & Needle Comfort and Firmness:

Tuft & Needle mattressThe Tuft & Needle is a mattress with a universal feel to it. It falls between a 6.5 to 7 on the 2-point firmness scale. The mattress will work well for most sleepers. It’s great for back sleepers and provides a decent amount of lumbar support and contours to your neck and shoulders nicely.  Stomach sleepers will like the firm feeling of the mattress and enjoy that the fact that their back won’t bow while sleeping. The mattress is also good for side sleepers, but some may like a mattress that they can sink more into while sleeping.

If your a heavier person you will find that this mattress won’t support you like it needs to. The base isn’t dense or supportive enough, and the mattress will have a soft feel to it. The top layer does allow for a nice amount of spin and sink. The base layer though won’t have a lot of core support for anyone and will degrade over time. As for now, the Tuft & Needle mattress falls into an ideal medium firm feeling.

Purple vs Tuft and Needle Comfort & Firmness:

The Purple and Tuft and Needle mattresses both have some downsides to them. The Purples grid feel may not impress some sleepers, and it’s not the best for stomach sleepers. The Tuft and Needle are better for stomach sleepers, but can’t support heavier sleepers. The Tuft and Needle also are made out of cheaper quality materials making us question its durability long term.

Purple vs Tuft and Needle Motion Transfer:

The motion transfer in all memory foam mattresses is very minimal. Both of these brands stay to that standard and isolate motion vibrations well. While the Purple does absorb motion transfer a little better the Tuft & Needle works well too. These mattresses will work well if you sleep with a partner or have children who like to join you in bed.

Purple vs Tuft and Needle Temperature Regulation:

purple mattressThe Tuft & Needle mattress has several features to help you keep cool during the night. These features will keep you from overheating and have you sleeping comfortably. The mattress has the top layer of foam infused with gel beads. These beads help dissipate heat as you sleep. The firmness of the bed also helps by keeping you from sinking into the foam. In tests, the mattress did just fine and we didn’t feel like we were overheating when we slept on it.

The Purple mattress has technology that helps you keep cool during the night. The polymer grid helps by having tons of space for airflow and helps the mattress have a good amount of circulation. The Purple also has a thin and breathable cover, that helps you stay cool. This may be one of the best parts about the polymer grid. Along with relieving pressure the optimal air flow and cool sleeping set this mattress apart.

Both the Purple and Tuft & Needle mattresses do a good job at keeping you cool during the night. However, the Purple mattress will sleep cooler, especially over the course of the night. Even though the Tuft & Needle is a firmer bed, the open cells of the polymer really let heat escape and flow. In this section the Purple definitely takes the cake over the Tuft & Needle mattress.

Purple vs Tuft and Needle Edge Support:

Tuft & Needle mattressThe Purple mattress has a good amount of edge support. It has a consistent feel from edge to edge and makes the whole mattress useful for sleeping on. You can easily sleep on the edge without feeling like you are going to roll out of bed. The Purple mattress won’t support much edge sitting though. The Purple mattress is very comfortable all around and just about any type of sleeper will be able to enjoy using the bed.

The Tuft & Needle, sadly, doesn’t have very good edge support. This is a let down since it can be one of the most important things you look for in a new mattress. When you sleep on the edge of the bed you will feel like you are starting to slide off the bed. We recommend that you stay 3 to 4 inches away from the edge of the Tuft & Needle to be fully comfortable. The bed is also not good for edge sitting and I don’t recommend trying it. Also, keep in mind that this hugely restricts your amount of sleeping space on the mattress.

Purple mattress clearly wins in this category as the Tuft & Needle doesn’t have much edge support at all. This is a little strange since the Tuft & Needle is suppose to be the firmer mattress of the two. With Purple though you will be able to comfortably sleep on the edge and have minimal edge sitting, as well. If you choose the Tuft & Needle though remember that about 3 to 4 inches of each side of your bed will not be used or at least comfortably usable.

Purple vs Tuft and Needle Mattress Value:

Honestly, there are a few ups and downs to both the Purple and Tuft & Needle mattresses in this category. The Tuft & Needle is very cheap and comes in every size you could need. The Purple is missing the twin and full size and is the more expensive of the two. The Purple does have better materials built in though and isn’t a huge jump from the Tuft & Needles price range. They both do have a 10-year warranty and free shipping to your home.

Purple vs Tuft and Needle Additional Information:

Both the Purple mattress and the Tuft & Needle mattress are made in the USA. This greatly helps with quality controls and controls the time the mattresses spend in shipment until they reach your home. They both have a 100-night trial period to see if you like the mattress. If you find you don’t like either of these mattresses then returns are easy for both companies. No matter which way you go you will be covered from defects.

Purple vs Tuft and Needle Summary:

purple mattress bare foamThe Purple and Tuft & Needle mattresses don’t have too much in common. They do both ships to your home for free which is nice. They also both have the same 10-year warranty period and a 100-night trial period with easy returns. That both also stay cool during the night with the Purple keeping things a little cooler than the Tuft & Needle. Both mattresses are also made in the U.S.A to help with shipping times and quality control. The Purple is delivered in a heavy duty plastic bag while Tuft & Needle is delivered in a classic cardboard box. The Tuft and Needle also have more off-gassing than the Purple mattress.

The Tuft & Needle mattress is the least expensive of the two. That being said, the materials in it aren’t the most quality. In fact, we question just how well the Tuft & Needle is going to hold up over time. The Purple, on the other hand, seems very durable and will last for years to come. The Purple, while it isn’t the cheapest, isn’t all that much more expensive than the Tuft & Needle. The downside for the Purple is that it comes in limited sizes. The Purple also may not be as good for back sleepers as the Tuft & Needle. Keep in mind though that you still may be better off with the Purple just because the Tuft & Needle doesn’t have any edge support forcing you to not use a portion of your mattress. We recommend Purple on this one.
